Consuming complex carbohydrates like whole grains is linked to better sleep by helping stabilize blood sugar overnight, while greater intake of low-quality, refined carbohydrates is associated with a meaningfully higher risk of poor sleep.⁴ A controlled sleep-lab study found that a low-glycemic drink before bed led to more deep sleep and better overnight memory retention than a high-glycemic drink, likely because the slow, steady glucose release avoids the nighttime blood sugar crash that fragments sleep.⁵ The effect wasn't identical every night in the study, but the overall direction was consistent: steadier blood sugar, better deep sleep.
