Lessons in Love is right for you if...

You want healthier, more fulfilling relationships

You are tired of the same patterns repeating

You value learning with others in a safe environment

You prefer practical skills backed by research

You are ready to grow, connect, and create lasting change

What is Lessons in Love?

An evidence-informed relationship education program for single adults who want to better understand healthy relationships, improve communication and relationship skills, recognize patterns that contribute to successful partnerships, and develop the skills needed to build strong, lasting relationships.

Most relationship advice is either generic ("communicate more!") or built on someone's personal opinion. Lessons in Love is different: it is built on Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Robert Levenson's research — over 40 years of longitudinal study with more than 3,000 couples — translated specifically for people who aren't in a relationship yet.

This isn't a lecture. Lessons in Love is a hands-on course: every concept we cover is paired with a group practice exercise, so instead of just hearing about a skill, you actually practice it in the room, with guidance, before you ever need it on a real date or in a real relationship. That is what makes it stick.

Already in a relationship? You'll still get real value here — these are skills that strengthen not just your relationship with your partner, but how you connect with family, friends, and coworkers too.

You will learn:

  • How to build the friendship and trust that research shows underlies lasting love, before you are in a relationship to test it on
  • How to tell the difference between a real red flag and ordinary imperfection
  • What patterns to look for in yourself, not just in a partner
  • How to communicate and repair conflict in a way that predicts staying together, not just getting along today
  • Green flags, red flags, and dating questions/ideas to use right away
  • Practical exercises you'll use on actual dates and in early relationships going forward

The skills you will learn — communication, handling conflict, building real closeness — apply to being a better friend, parent, and family member too, not just a better romantic partner. You are learning how to have stronger relationships with everyone in your life.

You will also get access to the "Is This the Real Thing?" questionnaire, adapted from What Makes Love Last? How to Build Trust and Avoid Betrayal by John Gottman, PhD. and Nan Silver, to help you think through whether someone you are seeing is genuinely a good match. Disclaimer: It is not intended to be a diagnostic tool or a replacement to your own good judgment or therapy. This is a psycho-educational tool, and these are questions to consider, not therapeutic advice.

What a Session Looks Like

Delivered live over Zoom in group or individual setting, with Fernanda and official Gottman Institute materials guiding the discussion. Group practice exercises are based on fictional scenarios, not your own relationship history. Any reflection on your own past relationships is done individually and seen only by you. Sessions are not recorded, since materials are copyrighted by The Gottman Institute; if you miss part of a session, you can catch up in your student book, though live discussion is missed.

Who This Is For

  • Anyone who wants to resolve repeating patterns and fights in their relationships
  • Singles preparing to date again after a divorce, breakup, or long time single
  • Couples and individuals who are already partnered, wanting to strengthen their relationship and other relationships in their life
  • Anyone who wants a research-based foundation instead of guesswork
  • Same-sex couples and individuals (later studies extend Gottman's original findings to same-sex couples)
  • Adults 18+, fluent in English (course is taught and licensed in English only; participants from any country welcome to our online sessions)

Who This Is Not For

This course is psychoeducational, not therapy. It is not a fit if you are currently experiencing a mental health crisis, an active substance use disorder, unmanaged severe mental illness, or a currently abusive relationship. For those situations, a licensed therapist or the appropriate crisis resource is the right next step.

My partner is verbally, emotionally, or physically abusive.

Please reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (text "START" to 88788), available 24/7, for guidance and support.

My partner or I are currently struggling with addiction.

Please reach out to the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357, free and confidential, available 24/7, for guidance and support.

What makes Lessons in Love different?

Lessons in Love is grounded in over 50 years of research from The Gottman Institute, the world leader in relationship science. You'll learn practical communication, conflict resolution, and connection skills that are proven to work. Through guided discussions, short lessons, and in-the-moment practice, you'll leave each session with tools you can apply right away — in your relationships and in your life.

Who are the Gottmans?

Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Julie Gottman are psychologists whose research, spanning decades and thousands of couples, is considered some of the most rigorous work in the relationship science field. Their studies identified specific, observable patterns — like contempt and stonewalling — that predict relationship breakdown with striking accuracy, and specific behaviors that predict lasting connection. Lessons in Love is built on the Gottman Method curriculum for singles, and Fernanda (Nanda) is a Gottman Institute-trained Lessons in Love Leader.

Materials are included

Every participant receives the official Gottman Institute digital course materials by email at registration. If you register at least 10 business days before your course date, you can also request the physical student workbook shipped to a US address at no extra charge — just add each participant's shipping address at checkout. Registrations made within 10 business days of the course receive digital materials only. *Note that the physical version is black and white.

Your enrollment fee includes the course materials fee. Retaking the course is only free when you bring a newly-registered friend along — in that case you can reuse the materials you already have at no charge, with a new physical workbook available for an additional fee if you'd like one. Retaking solo is not free.

You will also get free access to the official Gottman Card Decks app with date ideas, date questions, and ongoing relationship tips and resources so you can put what you learn into practice on real dates going forward.

These materials are copyrighted by The Gottman Institute and licensed per participant. The materials fee is set by the Gottman Institute, not by us, and is subject to change at any time at their discretion.

Frequently Asked Questions

About the Program & the Research

Why does having healthy relationships even matter?

Research consistently shows that the quality of your close relationships is the single strongest predictor of health, happiness, and longevity — stronger than wealth, fitness, or fame. Healthy relationships also protect against depression, anxiety, and chronic illness.

What is this program actually based on?

Lessons in Love is built on the Gottman Method — over 40 years of longitudinal research by Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Robert Levenson studying more than 3,000 couples. Their lab could predict divorce with over 90% accuracy based on specific observable behaviors. This curriculum translates those findings into practical skills for singles.

Is there research showing this kind of course actually works?

Yes. Skills-based relationship education has strong research support. Multiple studies show that people who learn communication and conflict skills before entering relationships have better relationship outcomes than those who learn on the job.

Is this therapy?

No. This is psychoeducational group coaching — it teaches skills and builds awareness, not clinical treatment. It is not a substitute for therapy, and it doesn't involve processing trauma or diagnosing mental health conditions. If you are in crisis or need clinical support, please see a licensed therapist.

Isn't this just for romantic relationships?

No. The skills you learn — communication, conflict resolution, building closeness, setting limits — transfer to every close relationship: friendships, family, co-workers. Many participants report the biggest early wins in non-romantic relationships.

What does the course actually involve?

Eight sessions covering the Gottman Lessons in Love curriculum, with short lessons, group discussion, and hands-on practice exercises. You'll receive digital (and optionally physical) Gottman Institute materials and free access to the Gottman Card Decks app.

Pricing & Booking

How much does it cost?

Standard registration (1 person) is $199. Bring a Friend gets you and one friend registered together for $169 each ($338 total). Groups of 3+ get $169/person (3–5), $159/person (6–10), or $149/person (11+) — all including Gottman Institute course materials. Individual coaching (same curriculum, private 1:1 sessions) is a standalone product at $349, currently at a promotional price for a limited time.

Will I be grouped with people I don't know?

Standard, Bring a Friend, and group sizes of 3–10 (Bronze and Silver) all join the same session as other participants registered for that date — you will likely not be the only ones in there. Groups of 11+ (Gold) are the exception: that session is private to your own party, with no outside participants. Individual Coaching is the only option that is fully private and 1:1 by default.

Do I need to purchase tickets together to get the Bring-a-Friend and group discounts?

Yes — register everyone in one transaction and the discount applies automatically based on how many people you register together. Pricing is already inclusive of materials.

Do you offer group or corporate rates?

Yes. Group pricing is $169/person for 3–5 people, $159/person for 6–10 people, and $149/person for 11+ people, all bought together in one registration. If you are booking for a team, organization, or event, contact us to set it up.

Can I bring a friend?

Two ways. Buy a Bring-a-Friend ticket and register both of you together for $169 each ($338 total) — you can even mark it as a gift. Or register solo and invite a friend afterward using your personal invite link; they'll pay exactly what you paid per seat, and if you registered Standard, you'll get $30 back once they join and the workshop has happened.

Can I invite friends after I've already registered?

Yes. Every registration comes with a personal invite link you can share — anyone who joins through it pays exactly what you paid per seat, never a new discount. If you registered Standard, bringing in one friend this way earns you a one-time $30 refund, credited after the workshop date.

Why does the referral refund happen after the workshop instead of right away?

So we can confirm the friend actually attended before crediting anything back — it protects both of us from someone disputing or refunding their own ticket after we've already paid out.

Can I gift this or book for someone else?

Yes — for any ticket type. You don't have to attend yourself: check "This is a gift" next to anyone's info at checkout and choose from a few fun email styles, and they'll get a celebratory notification instead of the standard confirmation. Works whether you are buying one seat for someone or registering a whole group who'll never see your name.

Do you travel for corporate events or retreats?

Possibly — reach out and let's talk about what you need.

Do you offer a shorter version for events or parties, like bachelorette parties?

We offer a condensed workshop format for private events. Contact us for details.

Can I retake the course for free?

Only if you bring a friend — retaking solo is not free. When you bring a friend, your friend pays for their own registration, and you come along and do the course again with them at no charge. You'll need to provide the email you used when you purchased the course originally so it can be verified in our system, and then you can join your friend in the next cohort for free.

Do I pay extra for materials on top of the course price?

No. The materials fee is included in your registration for first-time participants. Alumni who retake for free alongside a new friend only pay if they want a new physical workbook.

Why is there a separate materials fee, and could it change?

The Gottman Institute sets a mandatory per-participant materials fee for licensed leaders. This fee is included in the price you see, but because it is set externally, it could change at their discretion.

Format & Logistics

Is it in person or online?

Live online via Zoom. In-person options are in development.

How long is the course?

The group format is a one-day Saturday workshop, about 7 hours (exact times vary slightly by date — see options at checkout). Individual coaching lets you pick an alternate Saturday, or request another time entirely.

What time zone is the course taught in?

EST (Eastern Standard Time). If you are in a different time zone, please double-check the start time before registering.

Do I need a computer or headset to join?

A computer with a camera and microphone is strongly recommended for the best experience. Tablets work. Phones are possible but not ideal for the exercises.

Will sessions be recorded?

No. The Gottman Institute materials are copyrighted and recording is not permitted. If you miss content, your student workbook covers the curriculum.

How long is an individual coaching session compared to the group course?

Individual coaching covers the same full curriculum 1:1 instead of in a group. You can take it in a single one-day session (same format as the group workshop, on a Saturday that doesn't overlap with a scheduled group date), or ask for it split across several shorter sessions — just tell us what works for you in the notes at checkout.

What is included in the price?

The full course curriculum, official Gottman Institute student workbook (digital, or physical shipped to US addresses with 10+ days notice), and free access to the Gottman Card Decks app.

Will I receive physical or digital materials?

Digital materials are sent by email at registration. Physical workbooks are available for US addresses if you register at least 10 business days before the course. Physical copies are black and white.

I am outside the US — can I still join?

Yes! The course is fully online and open to participants worldwide. Physical materials ship to the US only, but you'll receive the full digital version.

What information do you need from me to register?

Name, email address, and if requesting a physical workbook, a US shipping address. Payment is collected at checkout via Stripe.

Is This Right for Me?

How do I know if this is the right fit for me?

If you want science-based relationship skills, are open to learning in a group setting, and are not currently in a mental health crisis or abusive situation — this is likely a good fit. If you are unsure, book a free consultation call.

Is this course for same-sex couples?

Yes. Later studies have extended the Gottman findings to same-sex couples, and all exercises and examples are designed to be inclusive.

Is this only for monogamous relationships?

The curriculum is designed around the research base, which primarily studied monogamous couples. Some concepts apply broadly; others may need adaptation. Reach out if you have specific questions.

I am married / have a partner. Can I still participate?

Yes. The skills you'll learn strengthen all your close relationships — with a partner, family, friends, and co-workers. Many partnered participants report meaningful growth.

I am exhausted by dating apps and discouraged from putting myself out there. Will this help?

Yes, particularly if you are tired of repeating the same patterns. The course focuses on building internal skills — what you look for, how you communicate, how you choose — not on apps or advice.

My partner is verbally, emotionally, or physically abusive. Will this course help?

This course is not appropriate for active abuse situations. Please reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (text "START" to 88788), available 24/7.

My partner or I are currently struggling with addiction. Will this course help?

For active addiction, the SAMHSA National Helpline (1-800-662-4357) is the right first step. This course is not designed for that context.

Will I need to share personal details in front of the group?

No. Practice exercises use fictional scenarios. Any personal reflection is done privately in your workbook. You share only what you choose.

After the Course

Do I get any resources after the course ends?

Yes. You keep your student workbook and free access to the Gottman Card Decks app indefinitely. The app includes date ideas, conversation questions, and ongoing relationship tips.

Is there follow-up support after the course ends?

You are welcome to book individual coaching sessions after the group course if you want continued support. We also share articles and resources through our newsletter.

Can I stay in touch with people from my cohort?

That is up to the group. We can facilitate an optional group chat if participants want to stay connected.

Do I get a certificate of completion?

Yes. Participants who complete the full course receive a certificate of completion.

Policies

What is your cancellation/refund policy?

Cancellations made 14+ days before the course start date receive a full refund minus the Gottman Institute materials fee ($20). Cancellations within 14 days are non-refundable but can be transferred to a future cohort. No-shows are non-refundable.
