In one study, couples who held hands for ten minutes and shared a brief 20-second hug before a public-speaking stressor showed significantly lower blood pressure reactivity to that stressor, for both systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rate, compared to couples who had no physical contact beforehand.¹ A related study of cohabiting couples found that couples reporting greater partner support showed higher resting oxytocin around a brief episode of warm contact with their partner, alongside lower cortisol, lower norepinephrine, and lower blood pressure.²
This isn't limited to romantic partners either, though partner touch appears to have a particularly strong effect. A randomized controlled trial found that both receiving a hug and using self-soothing touch (like a hand on the heart) significantly reduced cortisol responses to a standardized stress test, compared to a control group with no touch at all³, with the effect for partner touch and generic hugs likely working through two combined pathways: the direct physiological effect of touch on specific nerve fibers in the skin, and the psychological sense of safety and belonging that comes with being held by someone trusted.
2. Touch and Your Immune System
This is the most surprising and best-documented finding in this entire body of research, and it comes from an actual controlled exposure to a cold virus, not a self-report survey. In a study of 404 healthy adults, researchers tracked daily interpersonal conflict and hug frequency for 14 consecutive days, then deliberately exposed participants to a cold-causing virus and monitored them in quarantine.⁴
Perceived social support protected against the increased infection risk that normally comes with more frequent interpersonal conflict, and hugging specifically explained 32% of that protective effect. Among participants who did get infected, those with greater perceived support and more frequent hugs showed less severe illness symptoms.⁴ The study's authors concluded that being hugged by a trusted person appears to be an effective way of conveying social support, and that increasing hug frequency specifically may help reduce the harmful effects of stress on the body.⁴
3. Eye Contact: A Parallel Bonding Mechanism
Eye contact triggers overlapping but distinct biological effects from touch, largely through the same oxytocin system. Oxytocin levels rise during virtually every behavior associated with bonding, including skin-to-skin contact, hugging, and extended mutual eye gazing specifically, the kind that happens naturally between partners, with research reviewing this literature concluding oxytocin plays a central role in mediating the effects of eye contact on bonding.⁶
This extends to measurable physiological synchrony between partners, not just a shared feeling. A study using dual physiological recording found that romantic partners showed positive approach-related brain activity while holding hands, looking at each other, or doing both together, and partners' physiological synchrony was strongest specifically while holding hands and looking at each other simultaneously.⁷ Separate research on brain-to-brain synchrony during naturalistic interactions suggests one mechanism by which long-term relationships enhance this synchrony is through the combination of a well-functioning oxytocin system, increased social gaze during daily interaction, and a felt sense of interpersonal connectedness.⁸
There's also a longer-term signal worth noting. Research tracking new romantic partners found oxytocin levels correlated with the degree of affectionate touch and synchronized behavior between them, and oxytocin levels at that first assessment differentiated couples who were still together six months later from those who had separated.⁹
4. What This Means Together
Touch and eye contact aren't separate rituals with separate benefits, they appear to work through the same underlying oxytocin-cortisol system, and they compound when combined. The research point worth taking most seriously here isn't "cuddle more" as a vague suggestion, it's that these specific behaviors have a documented, physiological stress-buffering and even immune-protective effect, particularly within a relationship with real trust behind it.
